"Since early 2012, the Iranian Rial has lost about two-thirds of its value against the dollar. This is accompanied by a decay and the internal value of the currency . . . Iran's economy itself threatens another problem: there is a dearth banknotes. Companies such as the German press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer (KBA) are under pressure to deliver any equipment that needs Iran for banknote printing. The interest group "United Against Nuclear Iran" (UANI) had already forcefully warned in early October KBA to make business with Iran. 'Tehran's only way to counter the devaluation of Rials, is to print new money', the union argued in their letter. The Iran-critics also pointed to the European Union sanctions in March, prohibiting the supply of notes and coins to Iran . . . UANI has now proved formidable ally of the U.S. government in Iran policy. Founded by the former top American diplomat Mark Wallace union members include former CIA Director Jim Woolsey and former BND, August Hanning. The UANI has exerted among other Siemens and Porsche massive pressure to sever links to Iran. The organization calls even hotels in New York  on this, the Iranian delegation at the edge of deny meeting UN hospitality." (Die Welt, "In Iran, only the stock market is booming," 11/11/12)

"Three foreign currency printing companies have decided to discontinue their businesses in Iran, UANI (United Against Nuclear Iran U.S. group) Communications Director Nathan Carleton told Trend. Earlier this month, UANI has launched a 'Iran Rial Currency Printing Campaign', which targeted companies that print Rial for the Islamic Republic.According to Nathan Carleton, three such companies have stopped their businesses there, as a result of UANI's campaign.'All three of the firms we contacted, 'KBA', 'Flint', and 'DLR', have informed us that they are no longer involved in currency printing in Iran,' Carleton said, noting that UANI applauds the companies for their decisions. KBA, of Germany, is the world's second-largest security banknote printing press manufacturer, and has sold printing presses to numerous Iranian entities . . . Nathan Carleton noted that no one should be helping the Iranian regime print more currency during this critical time.'We will continue to observe the rial's value, but we do not expect it to improve unless the regime changes course.'" (Bloomberg, "Three currency printing companies stop their businesses in Iran," 10/20/12)

"At least one major European engraving company that has been providing currency production services to Iran says it has stopped doing business there. The company, Koenig & Bauer AG of Würzburg, Germany, also says it has not responded to an Iranian request for bids to make the presses to print new rials. Koenig & Bauer’s disclosure was contained in a mailed response to a query by United Against Nuclear Iran, a New York-based sanctions advocacy group, which seized upon the 40 percent drop in the rial’s value this month to begin a new campaign aimed at the currency itself...  In letters Mr. Wallace wrote to Koenig & Bauer and two other companies in the banknote business, De La Rue P.L.C. of Hampshire, England, and Flint Group of Luxembourg, he said that European Union sanctions already prohibit Europe-based banknote companies from providing such services to Iran’s central bank. Mr. Wallace wrote that his group would be “contacting relevant regulatory officials in Luxembourg and the E.U.” to ensure enforcement." "After the sanctions were published in June 2010, Hansa began to move into the business abandoned by Sepanir's former German intermediary, Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH, which 'ended cooperation as soon as we learned the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were involved,' a Salzgitter spokesman said. Hansa took over some contracts that had been drafted between Salzgitter and Sepanir to supply the Iranians with fire-protection equipment and other technical energy-industry needs—fulfilling the orders for Petrokish instead, commercial records show... Several German companies contacted by the Journal said they had sold goods to Salzgitter for shipment to Iran until the U.N. designation of Sepanir last year. But after that, they said, they took up contracts with a new intermediary, Hansa... Mr. Gieseke said Minimax had been a client of Salzgitter and Sepanir before sanctions, that the stationery was brought to the meeting by a Petrokish representative, and that Minimax didn't notice the logos." "This license authorized the company to complete the sale and delivery of Mexican-origin goods, the precise nature of which OFAC redacted, to China, even though the goods had been shipped via the Iranian government-owned shipping line known as Irisl. Irisl has since been designated as an entity involved in helping the Iranian regime obtain technology it needs for its ballistic missile and nuclear programs. The license also allowed the bank that issued the letter of credit for the sale, HSBC, to make good on its obligations. In granting the license, OFAC wrote that Cometals had advised the agency that it was subject to large daily fees for every day that the vessel was not unloaded as well as possible financial claims from the Chinese customer for failing to deliver the goods. OFAC granted the license 'in order to enable Cometals to avoid significant financial loss,' it said. While OFAC was under no obligation to grant this license given that it involved an Iranian entity, OFAC's director, Adam J. Szubin, stressed that Irisl was not added to a special United States blacklist of proliferators until five years after this license was issued. Up until then, he said case-by-case exceptions were made in cases like this one in which the company did not know that an Iranian entity was involved when it entered into the transaction, and in which granting the license did not involve a direct payment from a United States person or company to an Iranian entity." "'U.S. government officials with intelligence and border security responsibilities' contacted Alcoa in January 2006 to advise the company of a continuing investigation stemming from the belief that one of its customers in Turkey was acting as a purchasing agent on behalf of the government of Iran, records show. The investigation was never publicly reported, but as a result of this notification, Libby Archell, an Alcoa spokeswoman, said scheduled deliveries to that customer were halted and the customer was notified that no additional shipments would be forthcoming. A license was needed, however, so that Alcoa could refund the customer for goods that had been paid for but not yet shipped "in order to avoid litigation and attendant discovery," the license application states.

It is unclear what product Alcoa had been shipping to the Turkish customer; OFAC redacted that information, and Ms. Archell declined to say. She said that Alcoa was 'completely unaware' and had no way of knowing that its customer was acting as a front for the Iranian government until the United States government informed the company of its investigation. The company uses an 'extremely thorough due dilligence process' to vet potential customers, she said, adding that the customer in question was not at the time on the government's blacklist of sanctioned parties." Remet is accused of selling Cobalt aluminate to Iranian engineering firm Mavadkaran, which manufactures equipment for Iran’s energy sector.

--

"Jarrad Beddow, 43 the former sales manager of Remet UK, is alleged to have played a 'leading role' in the shipment of cobalt aluminate to the Islamic Republic via Slovakia...  Remet applied for a licence to export the chemicals in the summer of 2008 but was told it had been rejected in September... Mr Hewitt said the authorities were alerted after Remet's managing director discovered the export had gone through." (Daily Telegraph, "Businessman 'exported WMD chemicals to Iran'," 6/6/2012)

"Although the company’s former sales manager, Jarrad Beddow, claims that there was no law prohibiting the export of the cobalt when it occurred in 2009, it is well know that cobalt aluminate can be used to produce the lethal radioactive isotope cobalt 60. Experts says this material is most likely to be used in a 'dirty bomb.' And, Since 2005, there have been reports that Tehran may be attempting to procure dirty bomb materials." (Global Security Newswire, "U.K Firm Investigated Over Sale of Dirty Bomb Material to Iran," 5/17/2010)
