UANI Statement on New Iran Sanctions Now in Effect

New York - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement today regarding new U.S. sanctions that are going into effect today, six months after their passage:

The sanctions going into effect today make it increasingly more difficult for Iran to do business with the rest of the world. We support these sanctions, applaud U.S. lawmakers for passing them, and urge the Obama administration to vigilantly enforce them. The international effort to economically isolate Iran will be aided by nations like China, Russia, India, and South Korea buying less Iranian crude. Ultimately, the U.S. and EU should take action to completely curtail the sale of Iran's oil.

As of today, U.S. law also states that any entity that files publicly with the SEC must disclose whether it or its affiliates are engaged in sanctionable Iran business. This is a step forward in forcing companies to disclose their Iran ties, and we applaud it. We call on U.S. lawmakers to go much further, and require entities investing in the U.S. to disclose and end any and all business in Iran.

At this point, the best option for forcing the regime's hand remains a full economic blockade of Iran, with only a humanitarian exception. An incremental approach to sanctions is not enough to address the danger of the regime's continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The U.S. must take decisive action, and bar any business, firm, or entity that does work in Iran from receiving U.S. government contracts, accessing U.S. markets, entering into commercial partnerships with U.S. entities, or otherwise doing business in the U.S. or with U.S. entities.

UANI has long called for a full economic blockade on Iran, to force companies to choose between doing business in Iran, or doing business in the U.S. In May 2012 testimony to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ambassador Wallace stated that: "The time for half-measures and exceptions is over. We must commit ourselves to imposing a complete economic blockade."
