LONDON - Iran's lucrative energy reserves are looking increasingly unloved, as the threat of a fresh round of sanctions looms over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to the United Nations this week.

Iran's president accused "a few bullying powers" of trying to thwart his country's peaceful nuclear program and declared in a speech Tuesday before the U.N. General Assembly that "the American empire" are nearing collapse.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sharply attacked the United States and NATO, accusing them of acting as aggressors in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of starting those wars "in order to win votes in elections."

UPI reported on the launch of United Against Nuclear Iran. "U.S. leaders of all political stripes must set aside their differences and 'send a clear and united message that a nuclear armed Iran is unacceptable,' the four wrote. Holbrooke, Woolsey, Ross and Wallace said they and others formed the non-partisan group United Against Nuclear Iran." Read More

Today's Wall Street Journal carried an opinion piece by UANI's co-chairs and president on the threat of a nuclear Iran. "We may have different political allegiances and worldviews, yet we share a common concern -- Iran's drive to be a nuclear state.... That is why the four of us, along with other policy advocates from across the political spectrum, have formed the nonpartisan group United Against Nuclear Iran.

According to Reuters, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told the Iranian people "to stop squabbling that was undermining the government, in a fresh sign of support for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his cabinet before the 2009 election....But this was the second time in less than a month he had made a speech backing Ahmadinejad and his government, under threat of more U.N. sanctions as the United States and its Western allies seek to isolate Iran over its disputed nuclear plans." The NY Times reported on an IAEA briefing stating that Iran has has improved centerfuge capacity while at the same time blocking attempts at inspection of key enrichment facilities. "In a six-page report, the agency charged the Iranians with continuing to stonewall about what some Western governments suspected was Iran’s past research on designing a nuclear weapon. The agency acknowledged that it had failed 'to make any substantial progress' in its investigation. 'We seem to be at a dead end,' said a senior official with links to the agency.

According to Iranian press, the Iranian representative to the IAEA said, "U.S. and Western countries have to cope with new realities: that Iran is the master of nuclear enrichment technology and at the same time Iran is cooperating with the agency". Read More

2 major stories breaking today, both reported on by the Associated Press.

First, "The U.N. nuclear monitoring agency shared new photos and documents purporting to show that Iran tried to refit its main long-distance missile to carry a nuclear payload, said diplomats who attended the meeting Tuesday."

According to the AP, an IAEA report due next week will say that "it has been unable to make much progress with Iran in its investigation into allegations that the country was involved in studies to make a nuclear warhead. The IAEA 'regrettably has not been able to make any substantive progress on the alleged studies and other associated key remaining issues which remain of serious concern,' it said in its latest report on Tehran's disputed nuclear programme.
