UANI Applauds EU For Iran Sanctions And Calls For More Action

(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement today applauding the European Union’s (EU) sanctions on 15 Iranian entities and individuals implicated in human rights abuses – including Iran’s ‘Morality Police’ and its Law Enforcement Forces (LEF).

“We commend the EU for its latest tranche of sanctions designations on some of the most abusive elements of the Iranian system. As only the second such set of human rights designations levied by the EU against the Islamic Republic since 2013, these were long overdue.”

“However, the EU has again failed to punish those most responsible for the weeks-long crackdown which has already resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Iranians – namely Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi. Khamenei has ordered the violent suppression of protests before and is doing so again now, while Raisi has spearheaded the regime’s ultimately fatal enforcement of hijab-wearing, leading to Mahsa (Jina) Amini’s death. The EU maintains Magnitsky Act authority for those persons and organizations involved in significant human rights abuses and corruption. Khamenei and Raisi meet that standard.

“The Iranian people chanting ‘Death to Khamenei’ and ‘Death to the dictator’ know who is ultimately responsible for their oppression. The EU, as well as the U.S., U.K., and Canada, must listen and act accordingly.”

UANI maintains The Iran Human Rights Sanctions Tracker (IHRST), a comprehensive, searchable, and sortable database of current and former Iranian regime officials sanctioned by the EU, U.S., and U.K. To visit the IHRST, please click here.
